Put A Ring On It!

Dear Beth,

My buddy told me about some guy who had to go to the hospital because of a cock ring. That sounds like something out of a bad comedy, but now I'm kinda nervous.

Can that really happen?

Skeptical but Curious

Dear Curious,

I totally get why that sounds like a punchline, but the truth is, yes, there are real cases of people ending up in the ER because of a cock ring.

The most common problem is when the ring is too tight or left on too long. Since a cock ring works by restricting blood flow out of the penis in order to keep an erection firmer or lasting longer, the danger is that it can cause too much swelling. Once the penis swells beyond the size of the ring, it can be difficult to stretch the ring enough to remove it. And if it's made of metal with no quick release, it can require an erection version of the “jaws of life.”  (Metal cutters used to release people stuck in cars.)

When this happens, people often try everything at home before finally heading to the emergency room for help. Then doctors have had to use bolt cutters, saws, or even orthopedic tools to remove it. That’s clearly an uncomfortable scene for everyone involved.

Also, heads up that using Viagra or similar meds with a cock ring, increases the risk of trouble. These drugs already keep blood flowing longer, so combining them with a tight ring can lead to excessive swelling, loss of sensation, or even tissue damage.

But, don’t panic! Used safely and correctly, cock rings can absolutely be a fun and satisfying addition to your sex life. Just don’t ignore the basics:

  • choose the right kind and size
  • pay attention to how your body feels
  • never keep it on for more than about 20 to 30 minutes
  • safety doesn’t ruin the fun! It makes it last

Cheers to avoiding a “sex sent me to the ER story!”
