Dildo vs. Vibrator

Dear Beth,

Is there a difference between a dildo and a vibrator.  If so, what is it?

Thanks,

C.P.

Dear C.P.,

I get this question all the time, thanks for giving me a chance to respond publicly. These terms have started to be used interchangeably, but let’s start with the “traditional” perspective.

A dildo is like your trusty bestie when it comes to penetration, whether vaginal or anal. Dildos are generally phallic shaped and made from various (body safe!) materials such as silicone, glass, or plastic. They are intended for penetration and don't vibrate or include any mechanical components. Dildos come in a wide range of sizes, shapes, and textures, catering to different preferences and desires. Some are designed to be incredibly realistic, others may be fantastical. One way or the other, a dildo can give you that oh-so-satisfying feeling of being filled up, whether you're flying solo or playing with a partner.

Now, about vibrators. These are like your own personal pleasure props. They’re magical because, surprise surprise, they vibrate! Lol. While some vibrators are also insertable, others are not. Thus, vibrators can be shaped like dildos or come in all sorts of fun designs—bullets, wands, eggs, saddles—you name it. And oh, baby... when we talk about good vibes? They can make you tingle from your head to your toes. Ooh-lo-la... they can be so powerfully pleasurable! It's like having a special party for all your pleasure zones. You can use them on any and all body parts, wherever you enjoy the most toe-curling sensations. Plus, most vibrators have adjustable speeds and patterns so you can dial in just the right amount of buzz for your ultimate pleasure ride.

While it would seem obvious that anything that vibrates should be called a “vibrator”, the lines have been blurred because innovative technology has made it easy to add a vibrating component to “simple” dildos. But since dildos are still designed specifically for penetrative pleasure, the term “vibrating dildos” has been coined to differentiate them from the general “vibrator” category.

I encourage you to collect a good variety of dildos and vibrators... because on any given day, different sensations might be the key to the most satisfaction.

With lots of good vibes and hopes of great pleasure,

Xoxo,

Beth

P.s. Important Notes: There are specially designed anal products because you should never insert anything in your butt that doesn’t have a wide, flared base. Also, make sure that anything insertable is made from body safe materials.
